This 1863 photograph of New Almaden reflects how Watkins was able to impose his artistic abilities on the task of documenting the town of New Almaden. Watkins was able to find the perfect spot for this composition: the intersecting hills are illuminated by the layer of fog and this creates a wonderful backdrop for the view of the town. During his time there, Watkins photographed the mine, mining operations and the town.
