Notes:CMP notes: The Mariposa Grove of giant sequoia trees (see cat. no. 110) is located approximately 5 km (3 miles) northeast of Clark's Ranch (see cat. no. 98). This view is one of thirty selected by Watkins in April 1863 for the first publicly issued set of mammoth prints made from his 1861 negatives (see cat. no. 113). See SPBNY November 1, 1979, R. Swain Gifford collection, sale 4295A, lot 298. Note: Galen Clark among figures in picture. Relates to a painting by Bierstadt.
