This photograph, taken during his 1865-66 trip to Yosemite, illustrates how Watkins combined art and business. He emphasizes the impressive geological landscape of Sentinel peak, while also including the Hutchings’ Hotel in the composition. The scene is idyllic and perfectly framed. It is likely that the people in front of the hotel include Hutchings and his wife. James Hutchings had settled in Yosemite and was hotel proprietor since May of 1864. This hotel was one of the first “tourist spots” in Yosemite and is near the current site of the Yosemite Chapel.
