Searches are not case sensitive. Searching for san francisco is the same as San Francisco.

Examples

Searching for Cliff House finds all images with the words Cliff or House. Images with both words are listed first in the results.
Searching for 1003 finds images with the number 1003. Several numbers can be searched at the same time, for example 1003 1045 3723 will find all images with those numbers.

The Options drop-down lets you narrow your search

By default your search includes results with any of the search words. A search for Yosemite Valley includes all results with either the words Yosemite or Valley. Alternately you may choose to only show results containing all the search words. The seach will then only include results with both the words Yosemite and Valley.
You can also exclude results with specific words. Searching for Valley and excluding Yosemite will show results containing Shasta Valley, Spring Valley, etc. but not Yosemite Valley.

Watkins used a specially constructed camera to expose 18 x 22 inch glass plates. He created over 1200 mammoth plate photographs during his career. Watkins photographs of Yosemite were very influentual in creation of the park.

Piwyac, or the Vernal Fall and Mt. Broderick, 300 feet, Yosemite Valley, Mariposa County, Cal.

1861

Carleton Watkins stereo views are among the first photographs of Yosemite. This view of Vernal Fall is one of approximately 100 stereo views and 30 mammoth-plate images made during his 1861 stay in the valley. His photographs helped raise public awareness of Yosemite's features and beauty.

"In December of [1862] Watkin's Yosemite photographs were exhibited for the first time at the Goupil Gallery in New York City, and in 1863 Senator John Conness is believed to have shown them to President Abraham Lincoln, who responded by granting Yosemite Valley and the surrounding area to the State of California with the mandate that the site be forever in the public domain. Watkins's work thus played a part in the later establishment of Yosemite National Park..." ¹
