Searches are not case sensitive. Searching for san francisco is the same as San Francisco.

Examples

Searching for Cliff House finds all images with the words Cliff or House. Images with both words are listed first in the results.
Searching for 1003 finds images with the number 1003. Several numbers can be searched at the same time, for example 1003 1045 3723 will find all images with those numbers.

The Options drop-down lets you narrow your search

By default your search includes results with any of the search words. A search for Yosemite Valley includes all results with either the words Yosemite or Valley. Alternately you may choose to only show results containing all the search words. The seach will then only include results with both the words Yosemite and Valley.
You can also exclude results with specific words. Searching for Valley and excluding Yosemite will show results containing Shasta Valley, Spring Valley, etc. but not Yosemite Valley.

Watkins used a specially constructed camera to expose 18 x 22 inch glass plates. He created over 1200 mammoth plate photographs during his career. Watkins photographs of Yosemite were very influentual in creation of the park.

Panorama of Virginia City from the North End. No. 4.

1875-77

As with many of his more “urban” photographs, this panoramic stereoview of Virginia City shows a booming industrial and residential area. This is the fourth in a six part panorama. Watkins made a number of panoramic views in his career capturing the evolution of San Francisco, Portland and Virginia City.

This view shows Virginia City at its peak. The population was at an all time high of 23,000 people. The mines were extremely profitable, returning more than $1 million per month to the shareholders. And the miners also enjoyed high wages. “Virginia City was a booming, boisterous, 24-hour a day town, boasting live theatre productions…many newspapers…a number of fraternal and social organizations, and an infrastructure of other recreational facilities…” ¹
