"In 1861 Lady Franklin, visiting the United States at the age of 63, with her characteristic energy made the then difficult journey to the Big Trees of California. The authorities honered her presence by naming one of the giant sequoias after her and another after Kane." (Ref. p271, Doctor Kane of the Arctic Seas, by George W. Corner, Temple Univ. Press - 1972). Note: Lady Franklin was the wife of Sir John Franklin, the British Naval Captain and arctic explorer who was lost in the arctic waters of Baffin Island in 1845.
